When a family or individual begins to think about moving their belongings from one home to another, there are many decisions to make. Initially, there’s the big decision about whether to relocate in the first place; then about all the details that come next. The 5 basic questions are why, when, where, what and how?1) Why? There are times when the decision to relocate comes from an outside source. Examples of this include a transfer by one’s current employer, a new employment opportunity after a job loss, relocation mandated by family needs such as moving closer to elderly parents in order to assist in their care, or for health reasons. Health reasons may force a person to change locations in order to be in a different climate, due to allergies or to be close to a specific medical facility such as one that provides care for veterans. There are also many reasons that a person may opt to move on their own, even within the same town. This may be because of a need for a larger space, a need to pare down the family budget with less expensive housing, or to be situated in a different school district.2) When? When a family or individual relocates will depend on a variety of factors. If the transfer is due to employment, the time frame may be mandated. If it’s to have access to a certain school district, a family may want to change addresses during summer vacation so that the kids can start out at the beginning of a school year. If a person must sell their current abode before moving on to the next, the timing will all depend on the real estate market and finding an appropriate buyer.3) Where? An important bit of realty advice is to remember the words: location, location, location. One can change many aspects of a home, but location is not one of them. Make certain the locale has amenities that the family members need and want. Look into schools, cost of living, crime rates and freeway access. 4) What? What supplies and materials will you need in order to successfully move your belongings? Packing supplies such as cardboard boxes, strapping tape and bubble wrap are some of the basics. It’s helpful to have a metal dolly or wheeled cart in order to transport the heavy items. You’ll also need a truck or trailer to haul everything. This is a great time to either cash in a favor with friends or hire a helper or two. Appliances and larger furnishings need at least two pairs of hands to carry and load up.5) How? How can one adjust to relocation and help their family cope, as well? With a bit of extra TLC, for one thing. Try to maintain regular routines that bring comfort such as adhering to regular mealtimes consisting of healthy foods, exercise, adequate sleep and downtime to read or watch a DVD.Moving can be accomplished more easily if one knows the answers to these five questions.
