A large percent of this natural food comes from our oceans, and inland rivers and lakes.            The NorthSea which lies between the UKand Europe has been severely punished. For examplethe stocks of Cod fell from 157,000 tonnes in 1963 to 38,000 tonnes in 2001that is a massive 76 percent drop, and demand was still growing. How ever, withsome tighter fishing controls, put in place by 2004 the stock had increased to46,000 tonnes.            In the1970’s the north Sea Herring populating took a heavy battering, for being overfished, which resulted in a fishing ban between 1978 and 1972 which allowed theherring stocks to recover. But heavy fishing was allowed to carry on and by thelate 80’s stocks were on the decline again. In 2004 stocks of herring hadreached their highest level recorded in the last 40 years, but there was todecline again in 2005.            On the WestCoast of the UK, we have the Atlantic Ocean, which stretches 2000 miles toNorth America at the closest points, a huge expanse of water, but even here thefish population has been almost wiped out with a 90% decline in fishpopulations, more so the poor old cod.            ThePhilippine islands are ranked the 11th top fishing country in theworld. They are also very fortunate that they are surrounded by very productiveseas. But even here the countries main fish species have shown a decline inover fishing.            The fisherfolk of the Philippinesare considered the “poorest among poor”. In the year 2000 their daily wasaround the retail value of 2kg of fish             The Philippinesare also credited with the smallest commercial fish in the world which is 1/3rd of an inch long and a fresh water fish. The sinarapan is found in very few waters Lake Buhibeing the most famous. The bulk of fish in the Philippinescomes from their huge lakes, Laguna de in Laguna and Rizal provinces; Taal Lake inBatangas province; and Lake Naujan in MindoroOriental.            The Philippines isalso a big exporter of fish, the majority of canneries in the country meetinternational standards and improvements are made annually. The largestdestinations are the USA, Japan, and Spain for Shrimps. Destinations fordried seaweed are China, France, and Republic of Korea.            World fishStocksA little more than half of all monitored marine fish stocksare now fully exploited; some species are close to their maximum sustainablelimits. In other words “take any more and they will be gone forever”.The demand for fish is growing yearly, as the humanpopulation grows, this puts pressure on fish stocks, every where in the world,on both fresh water fish, and marine water fish. But there is an answer, “FISHFARMS” or aquaculture. Productionfrom aquaculture is now meeting almost half the demand for fish as food (Brussels, 2March 2009.) Chinais by far the top producer in  aquaculture with more than 25 percentof Global production. Bangladeshhas replaced India forsecond place, Cambodiacomes next.China and other developingcountries combined now account for 95 percent of global inland capture income worldgets
