Since even the most careful attention will result in someadhesive deposits on the rollers where the edge of the film is usuallypositioned, the heat rollers must be cleaned from time to time.Fortunately, it's pretty easy to clean the adhesive deposits off therollers. First of all, never use blades, knives, or other sharp objects to cleanthe rollers. They are expensive and easily compromised if they aredamaged by a blade. Because the hardened adhesive can be so difficultto remove, it can be helpful to rotate the rollers very slowly. Youwill also see much better results cleaning if you do it regularly.Older, harder adhesive is harder to remove. Follow these steps to remove adhesive buildup from your laminating machine: 1.Ensure there is no film in the laminator. Because you have to cleanthe machine when there is no film in it, you may want to make a habitof cleaning the machine each time the film is changed. 2.Preheat the laminator until the light is on indicating the machine ishot. Be careful not to burn your hands while cleaning the machine. 3.Use a 3M Scotch Brite green scrubbing pad to clean the rollers. Donot use metal pads or Brillo pads, as these will damage the rollers.Scrub the rollers while they move at a very slow speed. Continuescrubbing until all of the hardened adhesive is gone. You may need toclean one area at a time if you can't move the rollers because the heatshield is not engaged. It may take a while to finish cleaning yourmachine, but your patience will pay off in scrubbing away the adhesiveresidue. 4.When you are finished cleaning, install new laminating rolls and besure to check to see that the feed table is fully engaged. A good rule of thumb for laminators is to clean them at least two tofour times annually, based on usage. If film is wrapped around therollers or inserted backwards, you will have to clean the machine(following the same procedure) before attempting to laminate anythingelse. You can prevent some laminator problems by being careful about how youuse your machine. You should not laminate metallic or glittered itemsas the glitter gets stuck in the rollers and may make the machineinoperable. Additionally, you shouldn't laminate heavily textured itemssuch as coins, wooden objects, and the like. Doing so is very likely tobreak the laminator. To keep your laminator running smoothly, here are some do's and don'ts to keep in mind: Don't take your laminator apart. If you do, you will void the warranty. Don't feed overly thick items into your laminator (it can strip the gears or ruin the motor) Don't attempt single sided lamination without protecting the bottom roller of your machine Don't attempt to use films that are too thick for the ratings of your machine Don't stop the machine in the middle of laminating an item (it will leave a mark) Don't leave the machine on for prolonged periods when it is not in use. Do allow your machine to fully warm up before you begin Do load your film so that the adhesive is facing away from the rollers. Do run a test sample for unique documents or paper stocks. Do remove laminated materials immediately after they are completed. Do turn off machine when not in use.
