A new 9.9kW bio-fuelled combined heat and power (CHP) system is now in operation in the north east with a further 25kW system due to be installed at the centre later in the year. These two systems will be developed in parallel with the existing bio-fuelled CHP system currently in operation. The new system will be integrated with the existing oil-fired boiler system at the animal husbandry facility, to offset both its heat and electricity costs. The heat from the system will be used to heat the green houses used at the farm for crop research.According to the Combined Heat and Power Association, the European Union is now the home of the worlds largest CHP industry, with around 104 GWe installed capacity. Nearly 40% of the electricity produced from cogeneration is produced for public supply purposes, often in connection with district heating networks.Packaged CHP systems of less than 1MW are the most versatile and widely adopted combined heat and power system used already in the UK, being installed in residential, commercial and retail buildings around the UK.
