Archeological finds show that the art of blacksmithing hasbeen known to mankind for around 6000 years, making it one of the oldestprofessions known to man. The discovery of metal was the beginning of a major step inthe evolution of the human race. Metal was hard and had immense possibilities,but the problem was how to use it. With the understanding that heating metalwould soften it so that it could be formed into useable shapes came thebeginning of blacksmithing. With the ability to both hunt and grow cropsmore efficiently than had been done earlier using stones and carved bones, thehuman race began to prosper. Although the basic principle of heating and shaping metalremains the same, technology kept developing until today he has at his disposalvarious types of ovens, forges, hammers and presses to shape the material.
