This need is even more pronounced during a recession when virtually the same number of photographers are competing for an increasingly smaller available photo sessions. One way to make a business leaner is to think carefully about what information needs to be retained and which information can be discarded. This article offers a list of ideas a photographer should consider when deciding on how to manage the retention of images and the lightroom catalog. First, a one lightroom catalog file should not be used for forever. The catalog just gets too big and begins slowing down the computer. It takes up too much RAM and hard drive space. Although using only one catalog is the recommended method given by lightroom, if you follow these instructions, the catalog will eventually literally bring your computer to a halt. A better method involves creating a new catalog from time to time. And really that is where the debate takes place. Two methods are commonly used. The first method is to create a catalog for each session and saving that catalog with the images from each session. The advantage to that method is the catalog stays small and can easily be tied to the corresponding images. The disadvantage is that if you want to delete original images so you are not storing all images into perpetuity, it is difficult to identify which images have been edited and thus need to be preserved for the lightroom catalog and which can be deleted. The second method is to, like the first method; create a catalog for each session. However, instead of keeping the catalog, the photographer instead makes a copy of each image that has been edited. The catalog can then be deleted. The advantage of this method is the edited images can be used at anytime with or without lightroom. Which method is better? That depends on your personality. If you are the type that is willing to pay a price so that you can keep all of your raw images "just in case" you will need them in the future, the first method is likely the better more efficient since you don't need to make and save copies of the edited images. You can just use the catalog. However, if you are the type who feels comfortable only keeping the edited images, the second method is likely better. You will no longer have the raw images so the catalog serves no productive function. Whichever way you come out, you will more organized and more efficient as you apply whichever method you most prefer.
