As part of its current Because I am a girl campaign which aims to reach 4 million girls by improving access to schools, skills, livelihood, participation and protection, the organisation has just launched a new interactive Facebook app which gives people the chance to list how many popular childrens books theyve read and to buy a virtual book for £3 which will help raise funds for girls in developing countries. As the virtual library builds, donors will be able to see how many children have been helped through the app.Reading books and going to school are things that many of us take for granted growing up in the UK but millions of children around the world, especially girls, dont get the choice to go to school and learn to read and write. Plans experience shows that girls are often taken out of school early as poverty forces families to choose which of their children to send to school. They miss out on education due to a mistaken belief that its of less value. Instead, they are sent to work, married-off or made to stay at home. Globally one in three girls are denied a secondary education.Plan UK Chief Executive Marie Staunton says, We are facing a global crisis in learning with 75 million girls around the world out of school. Shockingly, 80 million young women between the ages of 15 and 24 cannot read or write. Childrens books are vital for promoting language development and literacy skills, skills which are crucial in helping girls realise their full potential. If we want to end the cycle of poverty, one of the single best investments we can make is supporting girls to stay in school. By donating a virtual book through Plans new app, users can help give girls the education they need to move themselves from a life of poverty, to a future with opportunity.To achieve this, Plan aims to raise £420 million globally and £40m in the UK by June 2016. They are already helping girls like 13 year old Sur, in Thailand, to stay in school. She likes reading books and newspapers and shed love to be a writer when she grows up.
