Andrew Fieldman was an 82 year old widower living in Solihull, who was visited frequently by his two adult sons, Graham and Antony. Mr Fieldman’s wife Audrey had sadly passed away 14 months prior to the incident from a heart complication. Mrs Fieldman had collected a large quantity of gold and other jewellery, and even some valuable gems, over the course of her life, which the married couple kept locked away inside their home.Peter Kestler was a 23 year old man who had been “arrested more than once for committing a variety of petty crimes”, but was free at the time. Kestler heard about the Fieldman’s valuable collection from an unknown source and planned to steal the jewellery and other high priced items while the widower slept on the night of Sunday, 9th of March, 2014.Once it looked like Mr. Fieldman was sleeping in bed, Kestler broke into the house through the back door and began to look for the valuable stash. After approximately 30 minutes, the thief discovered a small collection of the jewellery and put it into his bag, unaware that he had woken Mr. Fieldman upstairs who had called the police, suspecting that there was an intruder in his home.Giving up trying to find the rest of the jewellery, Kestler got up to leave, walking to the back door, which passed the bottom of the staircase in the Fieldman house. Glancing up the stairs before leaving, Kestler saw Andrew Fieldman perched halfway down the staircase. Kestler shouted some verbal threats to “keep back”, startling the pensioner, causing him to clutch at his chest. Kestler turned and ran out of the back door and fled down the street.The following morning, Peter Kestler saw on the local news that an 83 year old man was found dead in his home by police, as they responded to his 999 call regarding an intruder downstairs. The report stated that the widowed father of two was found at the bottom of his stairs, after dying of a heart attack. Recognising the address, Kestler realised that he must have been responsible for the death of the man, scaring him enough to cause a heart attack.After two days, Kestler handed himself in to the police, and handed in the stolen items, stating “I was shocked to hear that this happened, and that I was the cause of it. I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t own up,” expressing to the Fieldman family that he had “wished the man no harm.”At trial, Kestler pleaded guilty. He was charged with burglary and manslaughter, and sentenced to 13 months in prison.
