Ive been a professional driver for almost twenty five yearsand all of a sudden, the government has decided that I need to take additionaldriving courses every five years in order to show Im competent. Surely spendingover twenty years on the road without being involved in a single accident showsthat Im a competent driver? Id like to think so but the current governmenthas a better idea, and it's called the Drivers Certificate of Professional Competenceor CPC for short. Now all professional drivers such as myself have to undertakethirty five hours worth of CPCcourses every five years in order to keep our jobs!Personally, Im disgusted with this as my clean licenceshould be all I need to keep my job. I make all my deliveries on time and getback to the depot quicker than many of the other drivers, and no amount of CPC training courses is going tomake me better at my job. Whilst other drivers are busy worrying about fueleconomy to save a little fuel and simultaneously slowing the job down, Imthere with my foot to the floor getting the job done, day-in day-out. And ifall the other idiots on the road knew how to drive properly they would be in myway, and Im the one who's expected to go back-to-school. It's an insult. It'smore than an insult. And to add insult to injury Im expected to pay for theprivilege. It's nothing more than a money making scheme for the DSA and JAUPT!Obviously Ive complained to my boss about it because he'sgoing to have to get other drivers in to cover those attending the CPC courses.He said it might make a better driver out of me, but I couldn't be a betterdriver if I tried. He said I might learn to drive more economically, save fuel,cut down on wear & tear on my wagon and be a safer driver. I told him Idonly had a few scrapes, which is normal for somebody who spends all day on theroad, and added that those 'hows my driving' stickers do more harm than goodbecause people report anything and everything just because they can. My bosswent on to say that CPC training courses were designed for people like me;those who constantly blame every other road user but themselves. He added thathe'd already booked me into my CPC UK course nextweek as he sees me as a priority case.
