The General Motors Foundation is a charity funding organization founded by General Motors in 1976. The foundation has provided funding for dozens of charities since its inception, including the Safe Kids Buckle Up program from Safe Kids USA and the recently ended Monday Night Football Tour which included employing football stars as volunteers to build playgrounds for schools nationwide. And the General Motors Foundation is making yet another donation, this time to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The donation is for four hundred thousand dollars. This donation will mark the donation of nearly six million dollars in support given to the Institute over the course of the last fifteen years.In addition to the GM Foundation giving their support to the Cancer Institute, the GM Senior Vice President of Global Product Development Mary Barra and her husband are invited to chair the Institutes thirtieth annual dinner on April twenty eighth. They are the second GM Foundation representatives to ever chair the event, following Dan Akerson, Chairman and CEO, and his wife from 2011 when over eight thousand dollars was raised for cancer research.Mary Barra is in charge of the design, engineering, and quality of new vehicles across the globe. Her service to General Motors has been recognized by Forbes magazine, which recently named her one of the Worlds 100 Most Powerful Women.Were very happy to have the support of Mary and Tony Barra as chairs of this years dinner to support cancer research, said Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D. president and chief executive officer, Karmanos Cancer Institute.
