Doing an oil change on your Harley-Davidson motorcycle on a regular basis will prolong the life of the engine as well as the internal parts. In order to be sure that the engine will run correctly, you should change the engine lubricant as well as the filter every 2,500 miles.There are things you will need before you start your oil change. You will need a 3 inch block of wood, socket wrench, torque wrench, drain pan, 5/8 inch socket, funnel, 3 quarts of 20W50, filter wrench, lube filter, shop towels, flathead screwdriver and parts cleaning spray.You will need to start the motorcycle to warm up the engine as well as the oil. Use a cleaning spray for parts to clean the area. Take off the lubricant filter.Taking the new filter and put up to 4 ounces of 20W50 engine lubricant in the filter. Allow the lube to be absorbed for about 1 minute and then coat some lube around the filter sealing. Tighten the filter back into place until it is against the oil pump.Using a funnel, place it in the tank neck and then add 2.6 quarts of 20W50. Take the funnel off of the tank and put the filler cap along with the dipstick back into the filler neck. Then turn it clockwise to put into place.Start the motorcycle and let it idle for about 3 minutes and then turn the engine off. Check the dipstick with a clean towel. Put the dipstick back in and then take it out again and check where the level is. If the oil level is under the lower mark, you may need to add more lubricant to complete your oil change.
