In our last article we talked about the woman behind theMontessori Method, Maria Montessori. A quick review of her life, she was anItalian physician and educator. She first began her research into what wouldbecome the Montessori method when she organized a day care in a poorer districtin Rome which she called Casadei Bambini or Childrens House. It was herethat she discovered what she called the childs true normal nature whichrefers to the phenomenon of a child turning from inattention, chaos, anddisruptive behavior to a state of peaceful, focused, intelligent activity. Thisactivity occurs when a child is left to oneself in an environment that isconducive to this behavior. To create an environment that allows a child toreach normalization as Dr. Montessori put it, there needs to be materialsdesigned to for their self-directed learning activity. The role ofthe teacher in a Montessori school is very different from the traditionalpublic school. In a traditional public school, the teacher will stand in frontof the entire class, and teach the entire class, and all students are expectedto progress at the same speed. In the Montessori method, the teachers are oftenreferred to as guides. Individual learning is encouraged, and the children moveat their own pace. Guides are trained to view children as having their owntendency to their own perfect self direction, and they are there to merelyremove obstacles that may prevent this from happening and guiding in the rightdirection. MostMontessori schools work with children ages 2-6. This is because these are theages that the brain of a child is most developing and most absorbent. Duringthis time a child can develop a love of learning that can be sustainedthroughout their lifetime. There havebeen many studies of the Montessori method and its effectiveness. AngelineStoll Lillard's award-winning 2005 book Montessori:The Science Behind the Geniuscites research that shows the benefits of the Montessori method in young children.Studies reveal that Montessori children perform better on standardized tests inareas of math and language and perform better in social situations.Parents should examine theMontessori school carefully and ask a lot of questions. There are many schoolsthat tout the name, Montessori, but are not strictly Montessori. Make sure theteachers are AMS/AMI certified and that they have the necessary materials for your child to reach their fullpotential.
