I wasn't aware until I started writing this article that 20 States still allow Corporal Punishment in the Public School system. I attended a Private School until I reached the 4th grade where Corporal Punishment was allowed with parental consent and signature. Yes they taught me a lot and I learned Pre Algebra by 4th grade, but after 4 years of this I personally snapped one day and refused to go to school because I knew I was gonna get a paddling that day. I had enough!The teachers used a hard wooden paddle and it really hurt. I also remember getting my mouth washed out with soap. I also tried things like wearing 3 pairs of underwear and it still didn't help. Although I learned a lot eventually I snapped and my parents had no choice but to enroll me in Public School which I liked a lot better. That's my story so I can say that I agree that this type of discipline will only make a child rebel against authority eventually and not encourage independence.I also need to mention that I would have stayed with that school, I was bright and really excelled academically back then. If they didn't have corporal punishment I think I would have had a really great academic career since I was one of the smartest in my class. It also caused my parents to think I was rebellious when I wasn't, I just didn't wanna get spanked, and those spankings really stung.According to Montessori Corporal Punishment is a bad way to go. Under the Corporal Punishment system the objective is basically militaristic. This system believes that the more you spank someone the less mistakes they will make and the sharper they will become. This is in contradiction to Montessori who believes the teachers job is not to instruct, direct, drill or otherwise take charge of the child. Instead the child should develop independent mastery of the subject material. By giving out Corporal Punishment you remove the childs sacred bond in the student teacher relationship. They start doing things out of fear only and that can have a bad life-long mental impact on the child.Montessori also believed that by nature children wanted to do good and impress the people around them and taught the principle of free choice which means that children only worked on tasks that deeply engrossed them. Montessori was also against external evaluations which the entire Corporal Punishment system is based on. She believes that children become so concerned about getting the wrong answers, that it depletes their confidence and that they can't concentrate deeply on their work.Not only that, she also believed external evaluations robbed children of their independence. The Montessori system is based on the fact that if learning is adapted to the child's spontaneous tendencies, they can find the right materials on which children will work and learn on their own. This is in contrast to the Corporal Punishment system that punishes you if you don't learn exactly what they tell you to learn when they tell you to learn it. Rewards and Punishments have no "space" in the Montessori Classroom. I agree with Montessori and can speak from first hand experience. Obviously this also means I agree with Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy that Corporal Punishment needs to stop. If not, you'll have students going through their entire life not thinking for themselves, only doing things solely based on fear of reprisal.
