Face it- we age. The effects of aging appear in the skin of our face. The skin around the eyes is especially susceptible to showing signs of aging. The following are some of the more common skin problems around the eye.The problem:  Eye wrinkles- a.k.a Crow’s feetWhat it is:  Have you started noticing fine lines and wrinkles extending from the outer corner of your eyes? Those eye wrinkles are also nicknamed crow’s feet. The cause:  Eye wrinkles occur from a lifetime of daily eye movements- blinking, squinting, winking, smiling, laughing, pretty much any facial expression. Exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays causes photoaging and wrinkles. Eye wrinkles are also exacerbated by the natural dryness of the skin around the eyes. What you can do:  You can refrain from squinting but you can’t stop blinking. Preventative measures such as the use of sunscreen and wearing sunglasses can also help, but some times a topical treatment can help. An eye gel or cream that contains alpha hydroxy acids or retinol (vitamin A) can actually help minimize the appearance of fine lines and eye wrinkles. These ingredients help resurface skin by speeding up the process by which dead skin cells are shed. Thus, the smooth underlying layer is revealed. The problem:  Dark circles under the eyesWhat it is:  Self-explanatory. Or, if you regularly have co-workers calling you “raccoon eyes” and asking why you look so tired, ask them to point out your dark undereye circles for you.The cause:  Blame it on too much late-night television; or, how about that party that kept you awake until dawn? Lack of sleep in the biggest cause of dark circles under the eye. Other causes include smoke, poor diet, or genetics. Biologically, dark circles are primarily caused by seepage of blood from the intricate blood vessel network beneath the skin of your eyes. This minute leakage causes the blackish bruising. In other cases, sometimes the dark circles are due to hyperpigmentation. What you can do:  You cannot alter genetics but you can alter your lifestyle choices. Get more sleep and/or quit smoking. You can also try using an eye gel or cream that contains vitamin K since some studies show vitamin K helps in blood clot formation. If the dark circles are due to hyperpigmentation, you can try eye gels and creams that contain skin bleaching ingredients such as hydroquinone or kojic acid.  These ingredients slow down the production of melanin. Talk to your doctor if you wish to try hydroquinone-containing products since there are some safety concerns with hydroquinone. An alternate is to choose eye gels and creams that contain zinc oxide or other microparticles that can reflect light and cause the skin to appear lighter. Be sure to read some eye cream reviews to ensure that you only deal with quality products. The problem:  Bags under the eyes; eye puffinessWhat it is:  The saggy, baggy loose pouch of skin beneath your eyes. The cause:  Some bags were meant to be full- gift bags, money bags, candy bags- but not these undereye bags! Undereye bags are an unavoidable result of general skin aging and loss of firmness around the eyes. What you can do:  Look for eye gels and creams that contain caffeine; this drives out excess moisture beneath the skin that can cause puffiness. Other good ingredients include herbal extracts or witch hazel, to reduce inflammation. Alas, the only other cure is surgery or laser treatment.
