In today's world we are more and more concerned about the cost of things. It seems that all we hear is that the price of grain is up, the gas costs are outrageous, and that the dollar is falling. However the paychecks don't seem to realize that things cost more now. Going to the co-op we spend twice as much for the same amount of food. So how do we stay healthy without breaking your wallet? It is important to discuss how to avoid genetically modified foods first. It is a very strange world we live in where we don't know if the food we are eating is genetically modified or not. Unlike in Europe, in the US and Canada food manufacturers are not required to label if their food is genetically modified or not. Whether it is safe or not is still controversial, just search in Google on the subject to see for yourself, and until it is proven safe it is best to avoid it. Probably the easiest way is to buy food labeled 100% organic as the US and Canadian governments do not allow manufacturers to label something 100% organic if that food has been genetically modified or raised on genetically modified feed, however 100% organic food is often expensive. To clarify, if something is labeled as organic that does not mean that it doesn't have any genetically modified ingredients; in fact foods labeled just as organic can have up to 30% genetically modified ingredients in it, so make sure it is labeled 100% organic. Some companies will label their products as non-GM which also says that they are not genetically modified, but it is rare to find products labeled as such. Another way is to use a website such as http://www.truefoodnow.org. Although this website is geared toward activism, they also provide a list of companies that do not use genetically modified foods. We will start with bread. You hear how whole grains are healthier for you than other types. Did you know that 100% organic whole grain wheat bread tastes very close to plain white bread and costs only pennies more? This includes cooking flour. Baking a whole grain wheat cake will taste very close to the white flour cake, but is exponentially healthier for you. They also have whole grain rice and pasta, but those tend to be noticeably more expensive. As a side note here just because that bread is wheat instead of white, does not mean it is whole grain. Make sure your bread says whole grain on it.Next we will discuss fish, chicken, beef and other meat. For poultry look for labels such as "free range" or other similar terms as such terms will be indicative of animals were not raised in cages all of their lives. Although the government only places regulation on the term "free range" for poultry, so other meats could just mean that the cages were bigger than the standard size. You will not notice a huge difference in price on meats labeled as such, however you will be eating much healthier food, food that was allowed to be raised as God intended. Beef is another story altogether. No matter how you look at it eating beef from your grocery store or restaurant is scary. All, and I mean all, of the beef sold at your grocery store and any restaurant is very unhealthy. If you want to find out more read this report of a cow's story from birth to slaughter: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2002/04/17/cattle1.aspx, it will probably ask you for an email address, I just used a fake one, like [email protected] ... anyways I suggest you read this story to really find out what it is that you're eating. Unfortunately there aren't very many alternatives. The options for buying non-GM beef are in many cases more expensive. If you have a second freezer and are somewhat close to a farming community the least expensive way to get non-GM beef is to go to one of the local farms that don't use Growth Hormone to raise their cows and those cows are pasture raised and you will find that these farmers will sell a cow at a price per pound that is very comparable to the grocery store price. This is usually done best when split with a couple of your friends, as buying a full cow on your own is going to be costly and it is unlikely that you can freeze 1200lbs of meat, unless you have 2 or 3 freezers. Another way is to buy it online from a source such as http://www.grasslandbeef.com. The people at this site sell meat at a substantially higher price, however it is pre-packed, and shipped to your door within a day or two. We have tried these guys and the beef is very tasty and amazingly healthier. If you want to know more about the health effects of non-GM, pasture raised beef versus your grocery store bought meat study the importance of omega 3 versus omega 6 and compare the differences of these in the two types of beef. A final note on beef is health wise non-GM beef is better than GM beef, however also as important is what did the cow eat? Is it corn or grass? You will find that grass-fed or pasture beef is many times healthier and better tasting, than corn raised beef, yet again is more expensive. Fish is another dilemma, not only is it an environmental issue that we won't discuss here; the biggest reason for eating fish is its omega 3 content. Fish raised on growth hormones grows twice as fast, but contains nearly no omega 3 whatsoever, thereby defeating its purpose. Salmon is the biggest concern because its taste is considered the best among fish lovers, but it is by far the most GM bred fish out there. The fish you buy at your grocery store is almost certainly GM. There are ways around this, however. Many towns that are near waterways will have fresh caught fish for sale, sometimes even in your grocery store. If you live near a sea port, you have the biggest advantage, because you have a fish market that sells fresh caught fish at prices that are usually below what you may pay for GM fish at your grocery store, so by all means, take the drive down to port and get your fish there. Often times the least expensive way to get non-GM fish is to go fishing. Yes, get out that pole, some worms, and a fishing license and catch your fish. Many find it to be a great hobby to get away from the stress of life and relax in nature with fishing. For those of you who don't have waterways or time to go fishing, a more expensive route is to use the site mentioned above, or ones similar to that and get your non-GM fish that way. Similar concerns and remedies apply to other types of meat such as pork, lamb, etc.The next food is eggs and dairy. It is very common to find "free range", non-GM or organic eggs and dairy even at your grocery store, especially if it is a local store rather than a chain one; however buying it from these places you will probably pay 3 or more times more than for their non-organic equivalents. The most inexpensive way to buy healthy eggs and dairy, other than raising the animals yourself, is to find local farms that will be willing to sell you the milk and eggs at prices that can sometimes be below that of the grocery store for the non-organic stuff. Of course this only applies to eggs and dairy, cheeses and other dairy you will likely have to pay a premium for as it unlikely that a farm would produce such foods. Sometimes a local co-op will sell these organic items at lower prices than your grocery store. One thing to consider with farm milk is that it will not have any preservatives, so usually your milk must be consumed within 2 or 3 days or it will start to go sour.Fruits and vegetables are going to be a bit different. It is very unlikely that you will find non-pesticide, preservative fruits and vegetables at your grocery store. There are really only 3 options for getting healthy fruits and vegetables. The first option, and really your only real option for year round supply is your local co-op, but they will have them at a premium price. A great source in the summer and fall are the farmers markets. They will have healthy fruit and vegetables and for prices that will often time be lower than that of the grocery store. The last way is for you to go to these farms yourself. There are many apple, cherry, strawberry and raspberry farms/orchards that will let you pick the fruit yourself, and giving it to you at a lower cost as they do not have to pay for labor to pick this fruit. It is also a great way to get out of the stresses of the city and to get into nature and spend time with your family. At most of these orchards you and your family may eat the fruit to your hearts delight and this comes at no extra cost to you. Finally I will quickly mention sweets, snacks and other such foods. The most important and most difficult thing to avoid in sweets is Corn Syrup and Hydrogenated Soybean. They are the least expensive, the most widely used and the most harmful sweeteners in our food. The highly genetically modified corn and soybean used in this sweetener grows at amazing rates. It is very cost effective for large companies and is found in over 90% of the sweet food we eat; everything from coffee creamer to cookies to butter and many, many, more; Nestle uses it in every single one of their products. However research shows that these two ingredients are the number one cause of the unnaturally overweight state of the American people. It has been linked to problems with heart disease, impotence, and cancer, however it is found in almost all foods. Why? There are many theories, everything from the Illuminati to money hungry corporations not caring for the little guy. You can decide the reason for yourself as to why, more important is what do we do? You really have 3 options here; first is to cook it yourself. This is the most inexpensive way of creating these foods, albeit time consuming, but you control the ingredients. If you can afford it, buying their 100% organic, and I repeat it must say 100%, alternatives at your local co-op, or third is to avoid it altogether, often times these foods are unnecessary and can be avoided altogether.Armed with this information it is now your duty to choose the healthy options for your family. Yes it is a lot more work, yes it will probably be more expensive, but is this really enough to stop you from doing all you can to preserve your family's health? I urge you to rethink your habits, this often done best in a family meeting, and decide to live a healthy life.
