There was a make or break point for all of them, however, when a single test determined whether they would ever practice dentistry.The Dental Admission Test, or DAT, is a standardized exam that is taken by undergraduate students in the United States who hope to advance to graduate school to study dentistry and become dentists. Passing the exam allows students to pursue graduate-level studies that can facilitate eventually becoming a professional dentist. At the same time, failing to pass leaves a student unqualified to attend dentistry school.The DAT is a computer-based, multiple choice test that is available to be taken at any time. Students apply to sit for it through a standard application given by the American Dental Association. If approved, testing centers are available for applicants in locations throughout the United States.A student is originally only permitted to take the test up to three times. If he or she fails on each of these attempts, that person can request permission from the American Dental Association to sit for the exam an additional time, although such a request is not universally granted. If the applicant does intent to take the exam an additional time, he or she must wait 90 days before each subsequent sitting. The fee for each sitting is approximately $320.The DAT is made up of four sections that total over four hours worth of work. The first section is a survey of the natural sciences that must be completed in 90 minutes. The second section covers perceptual ability and must be completed in one hour.
