Although there are many reasons that a person might need to visit a dentist, one of the most common underlying motives is to improve the appearance of teeth and gums. Most procedures are intended to accomplish this goal to some extent, but it is not the primary purpose that they are performed. For example, wearing braces may result in straighter, more aesthetically pleasing teeth, but their most important function is to prevent many serious problems that can develop with crooked or crowded teeth.Differing from traditional practices, the field of cosmetic dentistry consists of treatments that focus mainly on enhancing the beauty of a person's smile. This includes options like porcelain veneers, tooth reshaping, gum lifts, and, most commonly, teeth whitening treatments. Many general dentists now concentrate their interest and advertisements on cosmetic procedures in response to their growing popularity. Here are some things to consider about teeth bleaching treatments:- Tooth color darkens when people reach adulthood for a few different reasons. The mineral structure of teeth changes and enamel becomes less porous. Common sources of tooth discoloration are tobacco use, bacteria, and food. Drinking dark liquids regularly, like coffee or red wine, can stain teeth. Depending on the types of stains on the teeth, whiteners may not be very effective. They typically work very well on yellowish stains, but not as well on brownish discoloration. If the teeth have a grayish tint, bleaching might not work at all. Also, whiteners cannot change the color of dental bonding or tooth-colored fillings. If a filling is present in one of the front teeth, using a whitener will make the filling more conspicuous next to bleached teeth.- There are many types of whitening products on the market, including toothpastes, bleach strips, and hydrogen peroxide gels. Several are available for at-home use and can be found at grocery stores and pharmacies. However, only those bleaching solutions that are given out by dentists carry a seal of approval from the American Dental Association. Consulting a dentist prior to bleaching at home is recommended, and he or she can create a tray with a custom fit to the teeth. A well fitting application tray is ideal to prevent chemical burns on the gums and soft tissues of the mouth. Solutions that are dispensed for at-home bleaching are usually around 10% hydrogen peroxide.- When whitening treatments are applied by dentists, a protective gel or a rubber shield is used to protect the mouth's soft tissues. The bleaching agent used is a high concentration, between 25% and 38%, of either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Small plastic trays are used to evenly apply the solution to the teeth, and one treatment usually lasts for 15 or 20 minutes. To achieve the best results, this type of treatment may require more than one office visit. - Light-accelerated or laser bleaching involves the use of light energy to speed up the oxidizing action. A blue spectrum halogen light is the most effective type of light used. The light energy acts as an exciting agent on the peroxide, so that it oxidizes stain deposits more quickly. Exposure to the light source is only for 6 to 15 minutes, and the entire process can take as little as 30 minutes. The condition of a person's teeth determines the amount of time that the treatment takes. All types of whitening treatments can temporarily cause the teeth to become more sensitive. The end result of a brighter smile lasts much longer.
