Did you know your dentist is a superhero? No, they probably can't fly without the help of a major airline, and it's also unlikely they have x- ay vision without the use of their handy x-ray machine, but nonetheless your dental care provider is a hero. Your dentist can do more than just spot tooth decay and whiten teeth during an exam. Your dental care provider is also a good source for spotting abnormalities in your mouth that can be indicators of something more serious than a dreaded cavity or two.Your dentist can also detect oral cancer that can go undetected during a normal physical check up with your primary care physician until the cancer has progressed to a late and often untreatable stage. Oral cancer will present in your mouth as abnormal cells that look spotty white or deep red. These abnormal looking cells can tell your doctor that something is wrong and get you into a specialist before the cancer has spread to other parts of your body or progressed to a final and untreatable stage. People most at risk for developing oral cancer include those who smoke or chew tobacco, drink alcohol, are over the age of forty and males are more likely than females to develop oral cancer. If you have a history of cancer in your family tree or any of these other risk factors, it's a good idea to schedule an oral cancer screening with your dentist as well as your normal preventative care appointments. In addition to being able to spot the signs of one potentially deadly killer, your dentist may also be able to detect undiagnosed diabetes in patients. According to the July issue of the "Journal of Dental Research," an algorithm - simple steps in a procedure to solve a problem-can detect diabetes in three out of four patients who were not previously diagnosed. Those steps including evaluating patients with two dental guidelines including how many teeth are missing and how deep the periodontal pockets are. Your doctor will use these guidelines to do a periodontal exam as well as a point-of-care HbA1C test. A point of care HbA1C test is a simple lab test that looks at how much sugar is in your blood. Your doctor can detect potential risk factors for diabetes that only a dental care provider can detect. Those factors in addition to the traditional ones about family history and weight include having four or more missing teeth and periodontal pockets that are more than five millimeters deep. The success rate based on these dental factors was 73% and when the blood test was done in addition to the dental screening the rate for detecting diabetes went up to 92%.So while you may only think of your dental visits as a way to keep your smile bright and a way to stop dental pain, you may also want to think of them as a preventive checkup that may save more than your smile one day.
