When you schedule a dental cleaning and exam, you might notice that your dentist does not clean your teeth. Instead, a dental hygienist performs the cleaning, examines your teeth for the presence of diseases or abnormalities, and may even give you advice on proper oral health. You may not even see your actual tooth doctor during the majority of your appointment. For some people, this can seem somewhat strange. When you schedule a visit with any other kind of doctor, you usually get to see that particular doctor for the entire appointment. You may wonder if the person cleaning and examining your teeth is properly qualified to identify diseases or abnormalities. While there are several differences between your dentist and the dental hygienist, they are both typically well-qualified to perform their respective duties. One of the biggest differences between the two occupations is the amount of schooling required for each. A dental hygienist must usually complete a two-year training program and receive an Associate's degree. Some four-year education programs do exist in the field of dental hygiene, but hygienists are not required to complete four-year programs. After completing the training program, the hygienist must pass an exam to become licensed to perform the job in his or her state. The exam consists of a written test and a clinical test. To become a dentist, a person must complete a four-year undergraduate program, which does not necessarily have to be in a pre-dental program. Although the program he or she has completed may or may not be a pre-dental program, there are several specific classes that he or she needs to take to be admitted into a dental school. These educational requirements are mostly in science subjects, such as chemistry, biology, and physics. To be accepted to a dental school, the student must pass a Dental Admissions Test. After four years of dental school, the student earns a degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery, or D.D.S. He or she must pass an exam to become a licensed dentist in his or her state. The exam consists of a written test and clinical test.Another difference between a dentist and a dental hygienist is the amount of hours that people in each profession typically work. Dentists usually work four or five days per week and 35 to 40 hours per week. Dental hygienists, on the other hand, can and often do only work part-time. Dental hygienists do not typically make nearly as much money as dentists do. The salaries for both professions can vary by location, but the dentist's salary is typically much higher.During your appointment, the dental hygienist usually cleans your teeth and examines your teeth and gums for the presence of diseases or abnormalities. The hygienist may also take x-rays of your teeth for the dentist to interpret. Your dentist may come in after your teeth have been cleaned and examine them also. He or she will diagnose any problems that may exist, such as a cavity. The dentist will treat any problems with your teeth and gums if they exist. This treatment may include removing tooth decay and filling cavities. While your dentist has received more education and training for his or her profession, your dental hygienist is still well-qualified to perform the duties of his or her job. Both professionals are capable of treating your teeth and gums and keeping them healthy. Article Tags: Differences Between, Dental Hygienist, Must Pass, Dental School
