Toyota initially blamed the sticking accelerator problem on floor matsand recalled floor mats in 4.2 million of the cars eventually recalled for gaspedal deficiencies.Car buyers who sue Toyota willlikely attach significance to a report from Safety Research and Strategiesdocumenting 275 crashes, including 18 fatalities, caused by sticking Toyotaaccelerator pedals. These crashes date as far back as 1999. They may also relyon Toyota's actions to fix sticking gas pedals in Europe in August, five monthsearlier than it claims to have become aware of the existence of the problem inthe U.S.Already Toyota faces dozens of productliability lawsuits stemming from injuries and deaths and is expectedto face more, according to the LA Times. Uninjured Toyota owners are filingsuit against Toyota for the diminished value of their vehicles in light of therecalls; at least 30 class actions have been filed to date, the LA Timesreported.A recent action by Consumer Reportsto temporarily remove its "recommended" rating on the recalled Toyotavehicles could contribute to a loss in resale value for Toyotas.
