On Friday, dozens of people wereinjured in a train accident that occurred in Connecticut. A train that haddeparted from New York City derailed in Bridgeport and was then hit by anothertrain that came from New Haven. Investigators are still searching for the causeof the collision.Nearby hospitals claimed thatthey saw about 70 passengers after the accident, which is remarkable given thatthe trains were carrying about 700 travelers all together. Most of the injuredpeople have been released from the hospital; however, five still remain intreatment, and two are considered critical.Investigators have found a brokenrail on the tracks, but they are unsure whether that caused the derailing or ifit was a consequence of the accident. They have ruled out foul play for theaccident, though.Not only did the collision causeserious distress for the passengers, it has completely destroyed the rails ofone of the busiest tracks in the country. The lines will be shut down for anunknown period of time and over 30,000 commuters will need to find a new methodof daily travel.The trains have been removed fromthe scene and parts are being analyzed. Neither train flipped over, which aidedin preventing serious or mass injuries; but they were both heavily damaged.Investigators are studying every part of the train and tracks, including brakeperformance, wheel conditions and information from data recorders. The actionsof the crews are also being examined.Metro-North Railroad explainsthat the track will need to be completely rebuilt before trains can run on itagain. Because of another bridge replacement project, the train was acting asthe only way in and out of New York City from that part of Connecticut.
