Backlinks have great importance in the search engineoptimization world because of they are a very important part of the equationfor obtaining search engine visibility. The highly condensed version of whythey are important is that the search engines, Google in particular, looks at alink to a website as basically a vote from one website for another website.This came about from the common practice of citing research studies in academicjournals. The more citations, it is presumed, the more important the cited researchis.If it were that easy, webmasters could use automatedprograms that would obtain backlinks on hundreds or even thousands of websites.These programs do exist; however, they are inherently useless for a fewreasons. First, the search engines caught on to this strategy many years agoand developed ways to identify link farms and greatly discredit any valuethey have. Second, the search engines have become a lot more sophisticatedabout what they consider a vote for another site.All websites do not have the same credibility. For example,the BBC or CNN websites are generally thought to be full of relevant,high-quality information. A travel blog from your uncles Grand Canyon trip isprobably a lot less useful to web surfers. An article on Wikipedia on the GrandCanyon, however, is, and would therefore carry a vote value much higher thanyour uncles blog. Google, in particular, ranks each website on scale from1-10, with ten being the highest possible ranking. This PageRank comes fromhundreds of factors, but some of the big ones are time online, the content ofthe website and, not surprisingly, links to the website. A new website isalmost invariably likely to be a 1, which means a link from it to anotherwebsite carries very little value or vote power. CNN, in contrast, has a pagerank of 10, which means a link from it to your website would carry a hugeamount of credibility, at least in Googles eyes.So, the lesson is three fold: 1) links are important, 2)bad links (i.e., link farms) are likely to do more harm than good, and 3) notall links are equal in value.
