Perhaps youve seen places that advertise toy Yorkie puppies for sale and youve been thinking of getting one. Maybe youve even been thinking about taking your new dog and putting him in a show. While it goes without saying that raising and prepping a show dog takes lots of hard work, this is doubly true for certain breeds. Yorkshire Terriers have a very long coat, which means keeping them well groomed can be a tough job in and of itself. Getting that coat into show quality means pampering your pup and giving it the attention it requires.When prepping your Yorkshire Terrier for a show, the first step is the bath. Terriers must be bathed and combed regularly to keep matting and knots out of their long fur. Before bathing, do a quick check of the fur to make sure no knots have become entangled in the hair. If they have, gently pull them apart, making sure not to pull the fur directly away from the dogs body, which can cause the terrier pain. Take a pin brush and a comb to get rid of any matting you find in the dogs fur. If there is a considerable amount of matting or snarls, it may indicate that you need to do this more often. Youll also want to inspect the dogs ears for any signs of infection. If there is any redness or swelling, youll need to take the dog immediately to the vet for medication. If the ear canal is free of such symptoms, you may proceed to trim the ear hair as needed. Terriers, as with many long hair breeds, tend to grow an excessive amount of ear hair. This hair can clog up the canal and lead to infections. It should also be trimmed before any show. Pet stores sell a special ear powder you can sprinkle into the dogs ears to make plucking easier. While the average dog does not typically need to have its teeth brushed, the same cannot be said for the Yorkshire terrier, particularly if youre thinking of entering it into a show. These dogs tend to have excessive tartar buildup on their teeth, which can lead to tooth loss. A dog without its teeth is unlikely to perform well in a dog show. Keeping its long hair in consideration, bathe the terrier by taking a high quality dog shampoo and running it through the length of its fur. Do not rub the shampoo in circles as you might with a shorter haired dog. This can lead to further fur entanglements and knots. Rinse the dogs fur thoroughly and then use a conditioner meant for such dogs. Comb the dog out after he is dry and pin up his front hair with a bow to complete the presentation.
