We’ve come a long way since the days of the 14-inch CRT monitor. Today CRTs have been almost universally replaced by flat panel displays. For people working every day with graphics, the switch couldn’t have come soon enough! Their backs are deeply appreciative that the bulky and dense CRTs have disappeared from their workstations.Widescreen monitors, however, have seen widespread adoption as they offer great features for everyone. These monitors have high color visibility from all angles and offer extensive working space. This greatly benefits computer professionals, but it’s also useful for anyone working frequently on a computer. The wide screen allows references, working documents, graphics, and other information to be spread out across the computer screen in the same way one would spread them out on a desk, making everything accessible and cutting down on the somewhat frustrating cycles of “alt-tab” switching. While they offer many great features, choosing a monitor for individual needs involves some tradeoffs. Most monitors employ one of three main technologies: twisted nematic (TN), vertical alignment (VA), or in-plane switching (IPS). Each technology represents a trade-off between one of two issues: image quality and refresh speed. The term “image quality” refers to color fidelity and sharpness. The refresh speed is the rate at which the image can be changed to show movement.TN technology provides the highest refresh speeds, giving it better quality for moving images. However, it does so at the expense of both color and sharpness. Most CRT monitors used “24-bit” color. That means that each pixel has eight digits. It can be assigned a color number between 0 and 99999999 for each color band (red, green or blue) producing a total of 16,777,216 colors.TN monitors short change the color game to improve the refresh speed. They use only 1.5 percent of the color spectrum used in a CRT! TN monitors make up for the loss of color by blending adjacent pixels or by using their speed to alternate the color in a pixel with each refresh. However, these methods do degrade the sharpness of the image. The other big disadvantage of TN technology is dull visibility from an angle. That’s because its color molecules vibrate in a plane perpendicular to the screen.IPS, on the other hand, provides high image quality with lower refresh speeds. There are two primary differences between the way IPS and TN deliver color. First, IPS provides full 24-bit color: the whole 16,777,216 colors, not just 1.5 percent of them. Second, in IPS, the color molecules in each pixel move parallel to the screen. The parallel movement makes the colors more visible from all angles. Thus, overall, IPS monitors provides much better color, and the high quality color is visible from any angle. While TN monitors are usually sufficient for document work, IPS monitors are highly preferable for intense computer work.Although widescreen monitors have different tradeoffs, they offer plenty of benefits to make up for it. They provide plenty of on-screen working space, excellent color and visibility at all angles. These great features are beneficial to everyone, at home or at work.
