Russia is home to the home of probably the most famous railroad journey in the world; the Trans-Siberian Express. It is part of a network of railways that connects Russia with Europe and China. If you want to see a big chunk of Russia then this railway would be a great way to do it. The Trans-Siberian railway began being built in 1889 because Tsar Alexander the second wanted to have a train running from his home in St Petersburg all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was opened in 1891. Today the route begins in Moscow from where you can travel 9289 kilometers to Vladivostok. It takes several days to make the journey, and it passes through several time zones. There are connections to make it possible to travel to North Korean, Mongolia, and China. A ticket on this train for the whole journey only costs about 250 Euro. The Trans-Siberian Express passes through some interesting parts of Russian; what follows is just some of the places you will pass through. The first stop after Moscow is Vladimir. This is 200 km east of the capital and contains Cathedrals that have been that are World Heritage Sites. Yekaterinburg is the home of the Ural Mountains and when you have reached this city you will be entering the Asian part or Russia. This is the country's fifth largest city and the most important in the central area. This city is famous for its theatre and libraries. The Trans-Siberian Express passes through the Siberian city of Omsk. This takes about one day from Moscow and a journey of 2712 km. Omsk is experience some dramatic swings in weather. The average is twenty degrees Celsius in July and up to -20 degrees in winter. A day after travelling through Omsk you arrive in Irkutsk which one of the biggest cities in Siberia. The city is home to some nice museums and is the home of renowned writer Valentin Rasputin. Your journey has now taken you 5185 km from your start in Moscow. Ulan-Ude is the home of Tibetan Buddhism in Russia and the most beautiful and important Buddhist temple is situated about 20 kilometers outside of the city. Until 1991 this city was closed to foreigners but now all are welcome. It is 5462 km from Moscow.The final stop on your journey is Vladivostok, and you have now reached the Pacific Ocean. This is a big naval city and has a population of about half a million. The climate averages about 20 degrees Celsius in the height of summer and falls to about minus thirteen Celsius in winter. The most amazing thing about Vladivostok is how far it is from everywhere else in the world.If you want to see Russia then the Trans-Siberian Express is certainly worth considering. This is the type of journey that could change your life. Just make sure that you are not going to mind sitting for a long time. A nice way of doing the journey would be to stay in the cities along the way.
