Take the road less traveled to Machu Picchu by mountain biking and trekking along the rugged terrain of the Andean foothills. Its the best way not to miss a single breathtaking view of this spectacular city in the sky. You´ll blaze your own trail from Malaga Pass, a dizzying 13,900 ft, down to the Sacred Valley, biking past the snowy Wakaywillca Peak and the Veronica Glacier through the lush forests of the Eastern Andes. From your unique vantage point, you won´t miss a rare sighting of the Crested Quetzal, sword-billed hummingbird, scarlet-bellied tanager, or the massive Andean Condor. In the evening, you can spend a relaxing evening camping next to the Urubamba River. The next morning, gear up for another day of adventure, starting with a hike to the remote village of Santa Teresa. This trail climbs through coffee, tea, and cacao fields, and along this route, youll see the ingenuity of inland Peruvians, who have been farming in terraces for centuries. The sacred mountain of Salcantay stands in the background, and toucan and parakeet sightings are common along this route. You´ll lunch in Pacamayo Valley before diving into the icy waters of the Sacsara River for a refreshing swim. Later that afternoon after a full day hiking, relax on the banks of the river at your tranquil campsite and reward yourself with a delicious meal. After an early breakfast, youll take a drive to the Quechua town of Lucmabamba, and then take another high energy trek to Patallacta, where youll catch your first dazzling glimpse of Machu Picchu. The tough trekking will pay off when the awe-inspiring emerald mountain comes into view. After lunch, you´ll take a train to Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu, where you´ll be free to explore the local shops and restaurants before turning in for the night at a local hotel.Rising early for breakfast in your hotel, you´ll head to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. You will spend the day exploring this archeological wonder. Decide for yourself whether these mysterious archeological grounds were once a ceremonial temple or a resort for Incan nobles. You can lunch in a local restaurant in Aguas Calientes, and afterwards, you´ll take the train back to Cusco, and then return to Cusco.
