Santiago is a beautiful travel destination and the gateway to any major destination in Chile. It is an important hub as the capital and largest city in Chile, with a population of five million people. The city was founded by the Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Valdivia on February 12, 1541 who was one of the first conquistadors to visit Chile when he made his expedition south from Cusco with Diego de Almagro to search for wealthy empires. Santiago is one of Latin Americas most modern metropolitan areas, with an expansive and extremely convenient system of underground trains. Unfortunately, due to thermal inversion, a meteorological phenomenon where a warm layer of air holds down a cooler layer closer to the ground, the city is plagued with high levels of smog and air pollution. This negative connotation has affected Santiagos appeal as a popular tourist destination, though in reality, it is a spectacular place to visit or even live. First of all, it is a beautiful port city, with spectacular ocean views to complement the backdrop of the Andes Mountains. It was nicknamed the Jewel of the Pacific (its name literally means paradise valley), and in 2003 was declared a World Heritage Site due to its stunning natural beauty, historical importance, and its unique architecture built upon steep hillsides.Viña del Mar is another must-see location on your visit to Santiago. This is Chiles fourth largest city and its been nicknamed the garden city. Multiple beaches line the coasts to the north and south of Viña del Mar including Reñaca, Las Salinas, Miramar and Casino. A large number of visitors come each year to throw some money on the tables in their famous casino. They also host the Viña del Mar International Song Festival every year in the Quinta Vergara Amphitheater. Santiago is in an ideal location with access to stunning wine country and the beaches within an hours drive. It is a short distance away from some of the best skiing in Chile, and with its location in central Chile it is a wonderful starting point for any vacation in either the north to the Atacama Desert or Lauca National Park or the south, to the Lake District and Patagonia. Santiagos international airport is flown by multiple major characters and there are domestic flights that can zip you around the country to see the highlights in no time.
