Many will no doubt be en route to Mount Kiliminjaro, the Serengeti or Zanzibar, but there is also much to absorb in the colourful city with its African, Arabic and Asian influences. You can see it all without straying too far from your luxurious four-star hotels like Southern Sun Dar es Salaam. At heart, and despite its commercial development, Dar es Salaam is a small coastal town. Traditional dhows and modern hydrofoils are moored at the waterfront and fishing boats supply direct to the fish market next to the ferry terminal on the city centre side. Along the coast on either side of Dar es Salaam are easily accessible beaches that are recommended for swimming and snorkelling. You can visit some of the small islands nearby, which form part of the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve. Bongoyo and Mbudya, just over and under 5km respectively from the city, top the list of favourites for visitors. Generally, the locals are easygoing and relaxed, which is reflected in the guitar and brass-driven dance music played everywhere. Look up the lively markets from your four-star hotels and enjoy local cuisine at the restaurants as you admire the colonial architecture in the city. The shady trees that line Shaaban Robert Street are another legacy of the colonial era. Seek cooler air there or hope for some respite from the sun amid the greenery of the tropical forest around Pugu Hills. If culture is your thing, you must make a stop at the National Museum, which is not far from your four-star hotels and close to the botanical gardens. The museum is a treasure trove of cultural, ecological and historical exhibits.
