In this series of articles I am discussing what to do on a weekend in Leeds for a variety of group types such as families, culture vultures, shoppers etc. Each article covers a different type of itinerary to suite different tastes. In this article I am suggesting itineraries for a group of lads visiting Leeds for a weekend who like their Real Ale. I have lived in Leeds all my life and so know most of the places although Leeds is a vibrant city and new places are opening all the time. Real ale is alive and kicking in Leeds given the wealth of Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria Beers. Tetleys was started in Leeds and continues to thrive as a brand though unfortunately, the Brewery itself is sadly set to stop production on June 2011. Here is my selection of Real Ale pubs situated right in Leeds City Centre.:Palace A great selection of ales with plenty of guest ales. It also serves food which is very goodDuck and Drake Just up the road from the Palace, this pub is a proper spit and sawdust pub with few refinements but great beer. They also have excellent local bands on, especially at the weekend.Adelphi One of Leeds' most famous pubs. Typical old fashioned pub with lots of alcoves making this a very cosy pub. It has an outdoors smoking area which is under cover. There is always a fine selection of good food and beer. There is also a function room upstairs.Whitelocks This is said to be Leeds oldest pub. A long narrow pub down a long narrow street just off Briggate. (Whitelocks, Pack Horse, Ship and Angel are all located down narrow streets off Briggage. It has a good selection of beers and food especially Yorkshire PuddingsShip A pub strange pub with a random selection of clientele from the young to the very old. Decorated with a nautical theme the pub is one of Leeds famous haunts. Not the best in terms of décor but well priced and friendly.Pack Horse - Another great pub with a more eclectic clientele. Not strictly a Real Ale pub but given its location in between the other off Briggate pubs its worth a try.Angel Inn This is a Sam Smiths pub which means you get a great range of beers and lagers at ridiculously low prices around £1.32 a pint for standard bitter. Not surprisingly therefore you get a good mix of people and it is popular with Leeds studentsThree Legs This pub is divided into alcoves as is the case with many of Leeds traditional pubs.
