Even History's Great Explorers Took An Anna Maria Vacation In 1513, infamous explorer Ponce de Leon began his lifelong quest to discover the ever-elusive Fountain of Youth. His exploits eventually led him to a pristine and undiscovered isle which he promptly named Ana-Maria-Cay in honor of the Virgin Mary and her Mother Anne. So taken in by the region's beauty, Ponce de Leon planned to begin colonization; however, his life was cut short before he could turn his vision into a reality.Hernando de Soto was the next historically renowned explorer to land in the region while chasing his dream to unearth the legendary City of Gold. His journeys took him to current day Shaw's Point in Bradenton Beach where he started a settlement before his death, but never did unearth his golden city. Dismayed with the many failed wealth expeditions, King Phillip II of Spain decreed a halt on further Florida exploration and Anna-Maria-Cay lay dormant for centuries thereafter.More Recent History Of Note On An Anna Maria VacationThe isle officially housed its first permanent resident when George Emerson Bean, an avid world traveler hailing from Connecticut, settled down in 1892. Bean lived out his final years there in a huge stretch of property until his death in 1898. In 1911, the Anna Maria Beach Company, founded by Bean's son George Wilhelm Bean and financier and Fig Newton inventor, Charles Rosen, built the infamous pier named after the island itself.
