Newstead House is the oldest surviving home in Brisbane. In 1847 it was sold to government resident Captain John Wickham, and acted as the unofficial government house until 1862. The Newstead House was the center of the Colony's social events, and lavish parties. In 1978, the Newstead House was renovated and refurnished with Victorian antiques.City Hall: Completed in 1930, the Neo-classical City Hall is home to Brisbane City Council, the largest council in Australia. Brisbane early settlement is depicted by a beautiful sculpted tympanum above the main entrance. In the King George Square foyer, some particularly fine examples of traditional craftsmanship are evident in the floor mosaics, ornate ceilings and woodwork carved from Queensland timbers City Halls 92 metre Italian Renaissance-style tower gives a panoramic view of the city from a platform at its top. It is one of Brisbane's oldest buildings, and past renovations included the removal of the hall and staircase. The new renovations were done from the original design plan, and place the hall and staircase back into the building. This building is now used for civic activities, has a wonderful art gallery and fabulous restaurant.While you are staying in the Brisbane area, it is strongly suggested that you find tome to visit these building monuments.
