Famed as a centre for Catalan art, host to a yearly International film festival and firmly established as Spains gay capital, its safe to say that Sitges is far from your average Spanish seaside town. With its bohemian atmosphere, tidy beaches and lively nightlife, the resort attracts visitors from every corner of Europe keen to sample Sitges easy natured environment in the golden surroundings of the Costa Dorada. Located some 35km south of Barcelona, Sitges was previously a small fishing village best known as the home of celebrated Catalan artist Santiago Rusinol. Though the local economy was once heavily reliant on the production of wine, the tourism boom of the 1960s saw Sitges develop as an increasingly popular holiday destination, with in excess of 4,000 hotel beds now for hire in the once sleepy seaside town.With its golden beaches, hazy evenings and vibrant nightlife, Sitges is often likened to a mini Ibiza. With house prices far higher than the national average, Sitges is seen by others as Spains equally expensive answer to Saint Tropez.Regardless of the geographical comparisons, Sitges is undoubtedly the focal point of the Spanish gay scene, with an abundance of rainbow flagged bars and nightclubs scattered throughout the town. Although pricier than the average Costa Dorada holiday spot, the towns attractive palm lined promenade, authentic tapas bars and busy beaches remain a favourite draw for visitors prepared to splash out a little further than average.Sitges has 17 individual beaches that occupy around 3km of the towns south western coastline. The majority sit adjacent to the striking promenade of Passeig Maritim and are well served by the avenues various cafes, shops and tavernas. Amongst the most popular beaches is the Platja de la Fragata, a spacious stretch of sand that sits directly below the seafront church. Here visitors will find sun loungers, beach volleyball nets and pedalos available for hire, though the beach is invariably crowded during the peak summer months.Sitges enjoys something of a micro climate with over 300 days of sunshine every year and peak temperatures in excess of 30 degrees Celsius during the height of summer. August sees an increase in the towns humidity levels, with many local residents heading for the surrounding hills in search of respite from the stifling conditions. With this in mind, Sitges summer visitors should take care to pack plenty of sun protection!While the summer months are undeniably hot, visitors to Sitges will find a hectic calendar of local activities planned throughout the period. Festivals are a year round occurrence in the seaside town, be it a celebration of jazz, tango, gastronomy, poetry or vintage cars. The standout event of the year is the raucous street carnival held in February or March that sees thousands of jovial local townsfolk and curious foreign visitors fiesta through Sitges narrow streets and into the early hours.
