In 1932, 24,000 square kilometers in the Chobe district were officially declared a non-hunting area and this was the beginning of what would become Chobe National Park in 1967. There were some timber settlements in the area that were gradually moved out, and in 1975, the whole protected area became exempt from human activity. The Chobe National Park is famous for its huge elephant population. There are approximately 120,000 Kalahari elephants which is the highest concentration in Africa. There are also antelope, buffalo and the big cats as well as hippo, giraffe, zebra and warthogs near the riverfront. This is the most visited area of the park. From November to March when thousands of birds migrate is an excellent time to visit. Visiting Chobe National Park is often combined with visits to Victoria Falls in Zambia and the Okavango Delta in Botswana. The Okavango Delta is an inland delta, the largest in the world, which has a fascinating area of lagoons, channels and small islands covered with palm trees where a huge variety of animals live. Chobe National Park is divided into four eco-systems including plains, forests, marsh and swamps and dry, hot hinterland. Safaris range from luxury safaris which have very pleasant, comfortable accommodation to short safaris in safari lodges on the banks of the Zambezi River. Safaris can be customized for each group, and visitors do not travel with people they dont know, but there will be others staying in the camps and lodges. Most of the safaris include several places in the park and sites nearby, depending on the length of the safari. Safari timings range anywhere from five days to 22 days. Chobe National Park safaris visit pristine wilderness which contains the greatest concentration of wildlife in the world. Visitors see the natural wonders and have amazing photographic opportunities. Some safaris have professional photographers along to give advice and help so that visitors can get the African photographs of their dreams.
