In a little corner of Texas, there's a town called Marfa that is known for its ghost lights in the nearby desert. This is an area well worth exploring especially if you want to try to solve the mystery of the Marfa ghost lights that to date have never been solved.The ghost lights that show up in the nearby desert just 9 miles outside of town are described as globes of floating lights that seem to play and intermingle with each other before disappearing back to wherever they came from in the first place. The ghost lights always seem to show up in pairs and dance around in the dark performing for the audience before disappearing. The locals speculate that the lights are aptly named because they are the spirits of the Native Americans that lived and died in that Chinati desert or in the nearby area of the Davis Mountains.But no one knows for sure what the ghost lights are; the only thing that is known for sure is they were first written about in 1883, long before there were any cars or electric lights to be creating the phenomenon.If you plan your vacation around the Marfa lights you might want to try to attend the Marfa lights festival held every year in September on Labor Day weekend. There's no guarantee the ghost lights will be out dancing, but there are other fun filled events to occupy your time.During the day when the ghost lights are not at play you can explore for other ghosts in the nearby silver mining town of Shaftner. In its heyday Shaftner was a bustling town full of miners looking for their fortune in silver. The nearby saloons were full of gamblers and loose women ready to take their money. It's not hard to imagine as you walk the abandoned streets what life might have been like in the 1850s in this town.You can continue your exploration by going to Fort Davis, which was once one of the most important forts in Texas and the site of a massacre with few survivors. Walking amongst the Adobe buildings in the tall grasslands you can almost sense that there is still a sentry walking back and forth looking for the enemy to attack. If you're very quiet you may even hear the sounds of rustling in the grass and ask yourself, is it just the wind blowing, or is it the ghosts of the past fighting a battle long since over and gone?This is a wonderful area to plan vacations in because there is a wealth of things to do and explore, and all you need is a tent and a sense of adventure to create some fun filled family vacations that you will remember for years to come.
