You dont need to study history to realise that the Roman Empire spread far and wide in its heyday.What is less well known is that you can find evidence of exactly how far north they reached in England.What is so remarkable was they lived and worked almost up to the Scottish border.What they have left behind is a wall known as Hadrian's Wall.A holiday in the north of England would not be complete without a visit to Hadrian's Wall. Before reading on, let us just take a minute to go into the background of this amazing construction. Eighteen hundred years ago the Romans build Hadrian's Wall firstly as a defensive measure against the Scots, and secondly to demonstrate their political will to rule this part of their Empire. The Roman Empire at that time was enormous and the Wall was over two and a half thousand miles from the farthest eastern border in Iraq. Built by hand the wall was named after Emperor Hadrian and it took over twenty thousand workers including slaves as well as soldiers to build it totally by hand. 70 miles is a long way, and the wall starts at Wallsend in the north east, and runs on close to Carlisle in the north west. It lasted over 250 years finally being abandoned in 383AD at the time the Roman Empire was crumbling away.To see the best preserved part of the wall you need to go to Hexham in Northumberland, where there is around 10 miles wall to see. You probably won't realise that this 10 mile section of the wall is Great Britain's largest classical ruin, as well as being rated by Europe as a top antiquity site. You will need somewhere to stay and you can take in a bit of history here as well by choosing the Langley Castle Hotel. As an ancient castle you will enjoy the stained glass windows, spiral staircases, and of course the turrets. The castle and Hadrian's Wall have one thing in common which is defence against the Scots. You can also visit some ancient Roman Forts, again built for defence and housing the garrisons.Seeing sheep grazing safely all over Hadrian's Wall it is quite hard to reconcile this with all the fighting that must have taken place here. If you are visiting Northumberland you must go to Hadrian's Wall.As a postscript, there was an attempt to build another wall up in Scotland between the Rivers Forth and Clyde called St Antonines Wall, which was not anything like as substantial as Hadrians wall, and could be said to have been a failure, and almost forgotten, although there are still small parts in evidence.
