I have lived in Leeds for most of my time and visited York lots and lots of times. I even worked there for 6 months many years ago. Not that it has changed much. Thats really the thing about York; it doesnt change on the surface. If it did, people wouldnt go. Thats the attraction. If you are planning on making a trip to York you may be coming as a tourist to see the historic city and maybe to visit some of the museums and sites. Perhaps you are coming on business or to the Races. Either way, you will find some great places to stay in York either right in the city centre or just outside. If you do need accommodation, make sure to book in advance both to get the best rates and to ensure that the accommodation is available. If you have never tried a serviced apartment, York has some great ones to try. They are a perfect alternative to a hotel but provide more space, convenience and a home from home environment. Imagine a city centre apartment with a fully fitted kitchen, en-suite facilities, maybe a balcony, maybe located in an ancient building. York has all of these and more. They are also more cost effective than a hotel too. You pay by the number of rooms and not the number of people. They are ideal for families, couples and those wanting to entertain.Anyway, I digress! York has had a Minster (huge church) since the 13th century and it has been enlarged over hundreds of years since. The York Minster is one of the finest in the UK and Europe. If you do visit, make sure to go down into the crypt and also up on the roof to get a great view. The place is steeped in history and has a great atmosphere. York is also famous for being the capital of the great county of Yorkshire. This goes back years to when England was divided up into different kingdoms. When you come to York you cant ignore its other history i.e. the Vikings. York was at one time the centre for Vikings and they ruled from York for many years. York has built a museum to explain all about them called the Jorvik Viking Centre. You get to go on a small train and see how life was back in the day; complete with sounds and smells!For a more modern history visit the NationalRailMuseum. This is the largest collection of trains and related artifacts and must not be missed, even if you arent that interested in trains. They have trains from all ages and countries including Queen Victorias carriages and the Japanese Bullet train. I particularly like the old steam engines.If you get fed up of history then you can always shop. York has the normal chain stores but it also has the famous Shambles. There are ancient streets with lots of individual shops, many with and old themes. The architecture is particularly interesting with rickety old timber framed buildings which appear to lean and bend over you as you walk down the narrow cobbled streets. Alternatively, if you do want some modern retail therapy there is a modern designer centre just outside York with all of the Designer Shops selling goods at reduced prices. Whatever your interests, a visit to York is never disappointing. There is some great accommodation but make sure you book early.
