Costa Rica is a collage of nature, an assemblage of biodiversity. It is home to a bewildering variety of flower, birds, reptiles, and mammals. Whether you volunteer in Costa Rica or are visiting for your honeymoon, getting a close look at this amazing environment is an amazing experience. There are at least six distinct ecosystems in Costa Rica, each hosting its own panoply of flora and fauna. According to some estimates, the tiny country, which represents 0.1% of the earths land, contains a full 5 per cent of the worlds total plant and animal species. There are 24 national parks in Costa Rica covering 21 per cent of the country (28 per cent if the indigenous peoples reserves are included). The most impressive of all these is undoubtedly Corcovado, which National Geographic has called the most biologically intense place on Earth. The park is home to one-quarter of all tree species in Costa Rica and more than 140 species of mammals, from three-toed sloths to margay and pumas, and all four of Costa Ricas monkeys the White-headed Capuchin, Mantled Howler, Geoffroys Spider Monkey, and the endangered Central American Squirrel Monkey. The park also habours one of the largest concentrations of jaguars left Central America. The natural splendor is not just contained in national parks. The Monteverde Reserve has more than 100 mammal species, 400 bird species, and over 2,500 types of plants. Of these plant species, 420 are orchids. Established by American Quakers evading conscription for the Korean War, it is one of the countrys premier cloud-forests and one of only 12 true primary rainforests in the world. The Monteverde Reserve is the site of the Childrens Eternal Rain Forest, a 22,000-hectare bought collectively with the pocket change of thousands of schoolchildren around the world. You need not be Quaker or a school to contribute to preserving Costa Ricas natural wonders. You can be an ecotourist making sure to spend your vacation money on local and sustainable activities, or a volunteer in Latin America helping encourage preservation. Anybody can make a contribution.
