So, obviously, if you plan to do some exploring during your vacation, car rental will be crucial. The Fabulous Beaches of Eleuthera With well over 200 miles of coastline, it goes without saying that Eleuthera has plentiful supply of beaches. To be able to visit most of these beaches you'll need to have access to a vehicle. By way of illustration, if you're staying near Governor's Harbour and plan to visit Lighthouse Beach then you're looking at a 45-mile drive. And, it's a trip that you won't mind taking. Other beaches are scattered all along Eleuthera's long coastline. There are many you won't want to miss. Ben Bay, at the northern end of the island, is a tropical cove like you see in the movies. Once again we'll assume a starting point of Governor's Harbour. The distance to Ben Bay is also about 45 miles - in the opposite direction. Other Things to See and Do in Eleuthera You can also visit other attractions while you're searching out the many beaches. While visiting Ben Bay, take a short side trip to Preacher's Cave, which is also at the northern end of the island. The Ocean Hole in Rock Sound is a good place to stop while driving south to Lighthouse Beach. It's a great place to stop for a picnic lunch and feed some of the large fish that inhabit the Ocean Hole. Being Prepared for the Distances on the Island of Eleuthera Given Eleuthera's length, the distances between settlements can actually be quite large. Traveling from one settlement to another can be quite challenging without a vehicle. It's not uncommon to see hitchhikers along the road. Taking a taxi between places could get pretty expensive. If you only plan to take a taxi from your airport of arrival to the place you're staying, that wouldn't be too bad. But if you plan to explore Eleuthera then you're going to need a rental car. From Governor's Harbour Airport (GHB) to the settlement of Governor's Harbour is no more than ten miles. So if you don't plan to go anywhere from there, it makes sense to take a cab. But if you'd like to visit Harbour Island, the distance from Governor's Harbour to the water taxi dock is almost 35 miles. That would be an expensive cab fare - each way. Such distances are just a fact of life in Eleuthera. Places that you want to visit can be many miles apart. You need to decide if you need to book a rental car for all or part of your vacation. If all you want to do is just relax on the beach at your hotel, a car may not be necessary. If you're going to do any exploring at all then there is no doubt that you will need one. Getting an Eleuthera Rental Car Renting a car in Eleuthera is a bit different. There are no car rental chains here. You will be renting, in most cases, directly from the owner of the rental cars. Some require deposits and formal rental agreements, some don't. Some will start you off with a full tank of gas and others won't. Prices are dependent on a couple of factors - how long you plan to rent the car and the type of vehicle you want.
