It all started with Pong, back in 1972. It was like something out of a sci-fi movie, a mysterious, though fairly innocuous looking cabinet cropping up in pubs and bars all over the United States and Europe. A polished mahogany booth, with sleekly-curved sides, plastic edging, two stick-like protrusions and a tiny, monochrome screen, with the word PONG emblazoned across the top in a futuristically curvaceous sans-serif. What was PONG? What did it mean? A pungent stench, perhaps? No, this was something new, alien and exciting. This was the beginning of a great craving that would last for decades. This was not only the first mainstream sports video game, but also the first mainstream video game. It was the beginning of a new era of fierce competition, of new friendships, as it was also the end of many. It was huge in the UK, particularly in Scotland, where throughout the 70s and 80, it could be found it many hotels near Edinburgh Castle.It was the simplest of ideas, and arguably the most important and ingenious contribution to the rapidly-exploding world of electronic entertainment to date. The concept was so ridiculously simple that it almost undermined the cutting-edge foundations of technology that it was built on. Pong is no exception; if you simply Google the word then youll be overwhelmed by the amount of theories and strategies there are that lie behind this game. Even something as calculated and strategically-demanding as sports betting doesnt have anything on the depth of the mental, technical and physical strategy surrounding Pong.Now, almost 40 years on, the technology surrounding games today would have overjoyed the original fans of Pong back in the early 70s. Its funny to think that no one ever thought that it would catch on, crowding around a cabinet, squinting at a flickering monochrome screen in a dingy bar, screaming your lungs out in victory as your friends triumph time and time again over one another.
