As a traveler, sometimes you are lucky enough to get to spend an entire week in a city, seeing the sites at your leisure and discovering places off the trodden tourist path. However, there are other times that you are only in a city one weekend. If you find yourself with only one full day in Edinburgh, the following itinerary will make sure you get the most out of your trip. First, if you stay at a hostel or luxury hotel Edinburgh city centre will likely be right outside your front door. In contrast, most B&Bs are in the south of the city, more tranquil but more removed. Thus, one should opt for the more central accommodation. Start your day early with a stroll through Princes Street Gardens where you can see the Scott Monument. From here it is a short walk around to Edinburgh Castle. The early start means you will beat the crowds to see the Royal Palace, Scottish Crown Jewels, Stone of Destiny, and medieval siege gun Mons Meg. Next, descend the castle esplanade and exit onto the Royal Mile. You can spend the rest of the morning on the mile. Some of the best stops include the Scotch Whisky Experience, Camera Obscura, the Writers Museum, and Mary Kings Close. There are also plenty of shops on the street to buy souvenirs and good food for lunch. At the end of the Royal Mile are the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. After taking these in, spend early afternoon climbing up the extinct volcano of Arthurs Seat. From here you can see the entire city, from the sea to the castle and beyond to the Lothian countryside. You are now free for the evening. Try out the many pubs and bars on Rose Street back near where you started. Regardless of whether you are staying at a Leith or Murrayfield hotel, or right on Princes Street, the above itinerary will ensure you see the best of Edinburgh.
