Your journey of discovery begins at the 17th century Basilica, a Jesuit Baroque church. It is here you find the relics of Madrids patron saint, San Isidro and his wife Santa Maria de la Cabeza.Church records tell us that this man was made patron saint of farmers and of Madrid for his goodly actions towards the poor and animals. Isidore was known as Isidore the Laborer and Isidore the Farmer who was a day laborer as the name implies, but he wasnt long for this position in life. He worked on a farm owned by a wealthy man, Juan de Vargas, and while in service he displayed an ability to be more than a laborer; hence he was elevated to the position of bailiff for the entire estate of Lower Caramanca.Isidore was born around 1070 and came from extremely poor parents who must have been religious themselves to influence Isidore in his beliefs. Legend tells us that Isidore always attended mass before he went to work which his fellow labourers complained to the master about. The master had to investigate, at which time he found Isidore praying and an angel ploughing the field for him. Later he went to talk to Isidore only to find him ploughing with an angel on either side ploughing as well. This is when the master claimed that Isidore was doing the work of three men which is when he must have been elevated to the position of bailiff. Legend goes on to say the daughter of the master died and was brought to life by none other than Isidore himself. Further, the master had a thirst and Isidore enticed fresh water to spurt fourth from the dry ground to give him a drink.Later on Isidore was able to marry; whether it was before or after his elevation to bailiff we don't know but what we do know is he married Maria Torribia who became Santa Maria de la Cabeza. The couple had one son who was to die at a young age. As legend says one day the boy fell into a well at which time the parents prayed for divine intervention and low and behold the water in the well begin to rise to a point where the parents could retrieve the boy alive. It was at this time that the parents decided to live in separate abodes while vowing celibacy. Isidore must have had a long life because if he was born in 1070 and died on May 15th 1130 that would make him 60 which at the time was a very old age; he died at his birthplace near Madrid. The story of his miracles didnt end with his death because when King Philip III of Spain touched the relics of this saint he became cured of a deadly disease he had recently been struck down with. This is why today Saint Isidore is buried in an expensive silver casket and not the original old reliquary.
