Most people who travel to Machu Picchu have a stop in Cusco or the Sacred Valley and decide to see the amazing ruins here. In order to gain entry to these sites, the purchase of general tourist ticket costing 130 Nuevos Soles is required. This ticket is known as the Boleto Turistico del Cusco; they can be purchased in tourist offices on Avenida El Sol or at certain checkpoints before entering ruins such as Sacsayhuaman. The sites included on the tourist ticket can be divided into 4 categories: Cusco, the Sacred Valley, the South Valley, and museums.First are the Inca ruins in Cusco and the surrounding area. The ruins at Sacsayhuaman, thought to have been an important ceremonial center for the Inca, rival any set of ruins for the size and refinement in construction of the enormous stones that comprise it. These ruins are a must see for any visitor to Cusco. A visit to these ruins is included in the City Tour of Cusco, along with the Cusco Cathedral and the Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun), which are not included on the tourist ticket. The tour also includes stops at the following three sites, the farthest of which, Tambomachay, is 7 kilometers from Cusco, as well as Pukapukara and Qenqo. Although just seeing these ruins is interesting in itself, travelers will benefit the most from having a tour guide that can elaborate on their significance.Second are the sites in the Sacred Valley, 45 minutes to a two hours from Cusco. These include the agricultural terraces at Moray, the fortress ruins at Ollantaytambo, the ruins and market in Pisac, and the market in Chinchero. For travelers with the budget to do so, it is advisable to have an all-day private tour of these sites. Large group tours frequently forgo the ruins at Pisac, which are challenging but supremely worthwhile to visit. Also, a private tour guide will be able to provide the kind of information that makes the markets in particular by explaining the products and bartering practices of the local people that make their livings at the markets.Two sites in the South Valley are also on the ticket, but due to lack of time and tight itineraries, most visitors skip these sites. Tipon, like Moray, was an agricultural experimental center, with terraces at different elevations to test optimal growing conditions for crops. It also has an incredible water fountain system. Meanwhile, Pikillacta has pre-Inca ruins. Although not included on the ticket, a stop at Andahuaylillas church is a must.The final category of sites on the Boleto are 6 museums, all of which are in Cusco, none of which are included on a Cusco City tour. The Qoricancha museum is on Avenida El Sol under the temple of the same name. On Plaza Regocijo, one block from the Plaza de Armas are the Museo Historico Regional, which provides a comprehensive overview of Cusco history; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, which provides a nice break from the typical folkloric art. The Pachacuteq Monument, built in the shape of a kero (ceremonial vase for sacred objects), is also worth a visit. It has 7 floors and explains the historical role and enduring significance of this Inca emperor.
