El Calafate is in the far south of Argentina, near the border with Chile. It is the entry way to Los Glaciares National Park which has several spectacular glaciers, the most famous of which is Perito Moreno. Other attractions are the iconic and very photogenic Cerro Torre and Mount Fitz Roy.80 km from El Calafate, Perito Moreno Glacier extends from the Brazo Sur of Lake Argentino. The glacier is named after Francisco P. Moreno, an Argentine scientific explorer who organized expeditions in Patagonia at the turn of the 20thcentury. The glacier acts as a dam separating Brazo Ricofrom the main part of the lake. Pressure from the volume of water accumulates behind the dam until it ruptures, which happens at irregular intervals, but roughly every 4 to 5 years. Daily tours depart from El Calafate to the visitor center at Perito Moreno Glacier and travelers can tackle 1-hour mini-treks of 5-hour big ice tours.Cerro Torre is actually comprised of series of peaks including Aguja Standhardt, Punta Herron, and Torre Egger. This massif is west of Mount Fitz Roy on the Southern Patagonia Ice Field on territory disputed between Chile and Argentina. It rises to 10,262 feet (3,138 meters) above sea level. Extremely sharp angles near the peak make it one of the most difficult to climb historically. Attempts were made to summit Cerro Torre as early as 1959, but the first undisputed ascent did not occur until 1974. There is also a mushroom-shaped rime ice at the very peak, formed by very low temperatures and constant strong winds, which also increases the difficulty of the climb. You dont have to be an ice climber to see Cerro Torre. From El Calafate, drive into Los Glaciares National Park and begin a hike through the Fitz Roy River Valley to a viewpoint 8 kilometers away. On a clear day, the peaks of Cerro Torre will award trekkers with postcard perfect shots.Mount Fitz Roy (also known as Cerro Chalten) rises to 3,375 meters and is the second of El Calafates photogenic mountain attractions. The peak was summited in 1952 by French alpinists and, along with Cerro Torre, it continues to draw countless numbers of trekkers and climbers. The border between Argentina and Chile detours several kilometers east from its southern route to go over the main summit. Mount Fitz Roy remains one of the most difficult mountain climbs in the world, given the sheer granite faces that require technical skills and training. Trekking tours will get travelers closer to the base of this mountain.
