The Moors were in control of this area for hundreds of centuries, only relinquishing control when the reconquest took place in 1266 under King Alfonso X. After this, Albatera, Cox and Crevillente became part of the kingdom of Aragon in 1296.If you can tear yourself away from the village then explore the surrounding area that abounds in wetlands, plains and mountains comprising the Park of Orchards with its 30,000 square meters including some beautiful flora, walking routs that are well marked along with a lake and a fountain.Today Albatera is much like it was a thousand years ago in its customs and traditions. With lush palm trees lining wide thoroughfares along with its well known whitewashed houses, this site alone will amaze you. A visit to the parish church in the town square is recommended. It was built in 1729 and dedicated to Santiago, the famous apostle. As you approach the church take note of the doorway. This elaborately stone carved door using a baroque style is worth the trip alone.
