The Lakes Crossing, or Cruce de los Lagos in Spanish, is one of the most famed and scenic ways to see the Lakes District of Patagonia. The journey is from Bariloche in Argentina to Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas in Chile, and can be done in reverse. Options are for 1 or 2 day crossing; and the latter includes an overnight stay in Puella, Chile.HistoryHistorically, this route was established in order to conduct commerce between Bariloche and Puerto Montt; merchants in Puerto Montt provided a great quantity of supplies to Bariloche, a situation necessitated by the distance between this latter city and Buenos Aires. The route traversed Lakes Llanquihue and Todos los Santos in Chile and Nahuel Huapi Lake in Argentina. Horses and mules were used for the overland sections.Bariloche & Puerto BlestTours begin from the city of San Carlos de Bariloche, and the first step is to go by bus from the Bariloche center to Puerto Pañuelo, a small dock in LLao Llao a few kilometers distant. (Llao Llao is also the location of the historic LLao Llao Resort. Passengers hop onto a catamaran which sails along the Brazo Blest (branch) of Nahuel Haupi Lake until arriving to Puerto Blest. This port is equipped with a small hotel, camping grounds, and a parks guard station.Puerto Alegre & Lago FriasThe next step is a land crossing by bus along the Frias River. During this leg, passengers will be able to appreciate the Valdivian forest, an ecosystem unique to this part of the world. Passengers arrive in Puerto Alegre and board a ship to cross Lago Frias. On a clear day, travelers will be able to view Cerro Tronador, an extinct volcano that straddles the border between Argentina and Chile.Puerto Frias & Argentine CustomsPassengers disembark at Puerto Frias and go through Argentine customs and receive an exit stamp on passports and migration cards. From here, travelers hop on another bus, which crosses over the Vicente Perez Rosales pass at the relatively low elevation of 3,201 feet (976 meters) above sea level.Chilean Customs & PeullaThe bus arrives to Peulla, 26 km from Vicente Perez Rosales Pass, where passengers clear Chilean customs, presenting visas and passports as necessary. Puella is a small mountain town with a complete tourist infrastructure, including a small airport. Passengers on the 2-day cruise spend the night here. The historic Hotel Peulla began as a guest house in 1896 and today provides serves as a top accommodation. In Peulla, travelers with more time can also visit El Encanto Lagoon and Cascada Los Helechos.Todos los Santos Lake & PetrohuéThe next leg of the journey is a cruise over Todos los Santos Lake, the last lake crossing. Passengers will have views of Mount Puntiagudo and Osorno Volcano. Arrival is to Petrohué, which has camping grounds and lovely falls of emerald green waters over volcanic rock formations.Puerto Varas/Puerto MonttThe final part of the journey is a bus ride to Puerto Varas, or Puerto Montt, which is 1 hour distant. Puerto Varas still retains signs of its German immigrant heritage and boasts casinos and 5 star hotels. The surrounding mountain areas offer opportunities for hiking through virtually pristine wilderness. From Puerto Varas, travelers can access the ski resort on Osorno Volcano.Puerto Montt is the largest sea port of Chilean Patagonia and is considered the capital of the region. It is a center for salmon aquaculture. The airport connects Puerto Montt to major destinations in Chile, and is the launching point for exploration of southern Chile.
