El Bolson, with a population of 30,000, is located in the southwest of the Rio Negro Province in Argentina. The town will delight visitors with its Andean-Patagonia forested wilderness, as well as fairly its mild weather which is a result of its topography, tucked as it is into a valley created by the nearby Andes Mountains. El Bolsons unique microclimate makes it perfectly suited for growing fine fruits, including strawberries, raspberries, and cherries. The region has also gained renown for its production of hops, from which the increasingly famous El Bolson beer is brewed. The town hosts the Fiesta Nacional del Lúpulo (National Festival of Hops) in February.The area around El Bolson was first inhabited by indigenous populations that moved through the area. In the 19th century, German immigrants arrived from Chile and began to form settlements in the valley. In the 1970s, Argentine hippies were attracted to El Bolson and visitors today can purchase their handicrafts at the artisan market which operates on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and is one of the most important markets in the region. Here, shoppers can mind wood, clay, metal and rock crafts, as well as local brews. Among the towns other specialties are cheeses, smoked trout, chocolates, ice cream, and jams and preserves.The main attraction in El Bolson is certainly its amazing Patagonian landscape of forests, valleys, and hills. In winter, the nearby Cerro Perito Moreno has a full ski facility, which is located 25 kilometers northeast of El Bolson and one hour by car along Route 40 from the Bariloche airport. There is also frequent bus service from the town to the facility. The ski center has 11 kilometers of area for skiing, 9 tracks, and 4 lifts. The highest point is at 2216 meters above sea level.In accommodations, El Bolson has a range of options from camp sites to posadas to hosterias to hotels, either in the town center or at resorts with full spas tucked into forested mountains.
