Peru has a wild geography. It includes coastal deserts, tropical forests, and high mountain peaks. You can see the best of Peru including its diverse geography, historical cities, and natural wonders in this 11 day and 10 night tour. Of course, this tour can be extended if you wish to spend more time in Peru’s most amazing places.Day 1 of the tour starts in Arequipa, the “White City,” named after the white sillar stone buildings that you will see everywhere in the city. After Lima, Arequipa is probably the most modern Peruvian city and it also boasts some of the best dining options in the country. A good way to learn about the history and culture of this very nationalistic is by taking a city tour, which will take you to churches, museums, and markets.Days 2 and 3 will take you to the impressive Colca Canyon, 100 miles (160 km) from Arequipa, which plunges to twice the depth of the Grand Canyon at 13,650 feet (4,160 meters). At the Mirador Cruz del Condor n a clear day, you can see the magnificent Andean condor take flight on the warm thermal currents that run through the canyon. Other attractions are bird species such as the giant hummingbird, the Andean goose, and the Chilean flamingo, as well as the La Calera hot springs, the caves of Mollepunko, the mummy of Paraqra. If you wish to extend your stay, there are opportunities for trekking, mountain climbing, biking, horseback riding, and fishing. At the end of the 3rd day, return to Arequipa. On Day 4, the most efficient way to get to Cusco is by plane and you’ll be glad to have extra time to enjoy the imperial Inca city. There is plenty in Cusco to fill a free day, and given the altitude, it’s also good to have a more laidback day just to monitor your reactions to the elevation. Cusco has a vibrant nightlife with first-class restaurants and, if you’re in the mood, dance clubs that keep going into the early hours of the morning. On Day 5, sleep in or continue exploring Cusco on your own, but an organized city tour is also a good way to learn more about the history of the Inca Empire and the importance of Cusco within it. Tours usually depart in the afternoon and visit the main Cathedral, the Qoricancha or Temple of the Sun, and the archaeological sites above Cusco: Sacsayhuaman, Q’enko, and Tambomachay. On Day 6, continue your exploration of the Andean countryside by visiting the Sacred Valley, whose main attractions include the Pisac market and the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo, 1.5 hours from Cusco. Other possibilities include the circular agricultural terraces at Moray and the salt mines in Maras. With so many sites, private tour is the best way to ensure that you’ll see what you want to see. At the end of the tour, you can either spend the night in the Sacred Valley (lodging options range from simple hostels to resort spas) and get an early morning train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu village) or take the full train ride from Cusco to Machu Picchu.Day 7 is your day at Machu Picchu, the hidden Inca city that will take your breath away with its scale and splendor. A guided tour is highly advisable and lasts about 2 hours. After the tour the options for independent exploration and picture-taking are abundant. The tour can be extended if you feel like Machu Picchu is worth a second day – most would agree that it is. Alternate routes to get to Machu Picchu are via multi day treks on the Inca Trail.Day 8 through 11, the last leg of the tour is to the Amazon via the port town of Puerto Maldonado. By staying at a jungle lodge you will be able to best appreciate the incredible concentration of biological diversity which makes this part of the world one of the most inspiring. Your tour can include visits to macaw clay licks, boat tours to spot river otters, treks through the rainforest, and visits to local communities. From here you can return home or visit other of Peru’s travel destinations including places like Mancora, Nazca, or Iquitos. Enjoy!
