If you've ever talked to a housekeeper or management staff at any of the hotels you've visited, you might become quickly aware that many guests forget their manners when they are away from home. While this is simply human nature -- albeit not the better part of it -- there's no reason you can't rise above. Just because you're paying for the pleasure of staying in a room doesn't mean you shouldn't treat it with the respect reserved for another's home. If you want to be a better guest, here are some of the things you can do.Throw away your trash.You might not believe it, but guests have a tendency to leave their rooms an absolute mess when they leave their hotels. Trash all over the dressers, the floor, and virtually everywhere but the garbage can. You might be thinking, "So what, that's what the maids are for," but you're leaving decisions in their hands that you might be better equipped to make yourself. For instance, what if you leave something valuable in your room, such as an important report. If your important papers are mixed together with a bunch of trash, you may have little luck in retrieving it later. Keeping your room tidy and leaving it in acceptable condition is not only a courtesy, but a reflection on you.Tip.It is customary to leave the housekeepers a tip for keeping your room looking clean and fresh and straightening it for your return. However, many guests overlook this gratuity for some reason. Even guests who are quick to grab their wallets to tip the bellboy or the room service waiters often neglect to tip their maids. It doesn't have to be a substantial amount -- one dollar each day for each maid is sufficient -- but leaving nothing is poor form. Express your gratitude.Besides leaving a tip, think about leaving a note or taking the time to compliment your maid staff to the management before you check out. Few service industry workers are as underappreciated as the housekeeping staff at many hotels. Not only is the pay mediocre at best, but guests often have nothing but complaints about what they do.
