This small village of some 9,000 inhabitants is within easy reach of both the Alicante and Murcia international airport. Albatera is an interesting place with its historical sites and a population mostly of Spanish origin along with a few Catalan residences.Albatera is a village to be enjoyed most of the year due to its climate conditions. The micro-climate is created by the Sierra del Crevillent peaks which block a lot of the rainfall. Flowing just below the mountainous terrain is the Segura River which in turn gives the area a picturesque setting.In 1833 Albatera became part of the Alicante province with an economy based around the agricultural industry. The necessary water for irrigation of the crops was obtained from the River Segura. This was accomplished by digging canals around the villages agricultural land which created a network that survives to this day. Later, pig farming was introduced to the area and pigs, being as prolific as they are, soon became the main industry in Albatera. The economic basis was to change once again with the introduction of commerce and industry but the locals still grow lemons, vegetables and dates in the local area.The archaeological sites in and around the area have produced artefacts leading historians to believe this area was home to pre-historic settlements from the 3rd century BC: this was during the Roman period of expansion. In the 5th century the Arabs took control only to relinquish it to Alfonso X in 1266 when he re-conquered the village. Later it was to come under the control of the King of Aragon when he formed his kingdom including Albatera, Cox and Crevillente in 1296.Like a lot of Spanish villages Albatera has a town square where people gather to discuss the days events or just to relax while the kids play. The main attraction to this plaza is the parish church built in 1729 and dedicated to the famous apostle Santiago. A visit to this church is highly recommended if only to see the elaborately carved baroque doorway made of stone. Aligned on the square are the Town Hall and an old casino if you feel like a game of chance. The Moors left their mark on Albatera as well with the whitewashed houses lining the wide streets along with lush palm trees.If you feel like a slow long stroll, the Park of Orchards has plenty of room especially with over 30,000 square metres of beautiful flowers to roam around in. There are well marked routes to guide you to the lake and fountain in the park.
