Ecuador is a deeply historical city set amid the amazing landscapes of the Andes mountain range and on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The country has many and diverse attractions, perhaps the most popular of which in the Galapagos Islands, which are located approximately 620 miles (1,000 km) off the coast. However, mainland Ecuador also boasts some unique and interesting places that are worthy additions to a list of Ecuador destinations. Among these are the busy capital city of Quito and the tranquil, but adventure-packed town of Baños. The two cities are located 3.5 hours from one another by car and both are in the central valley of Ecuador. The road from one city to the other passes through volcano alley, including the stratovolcano Cotopaxi which reaches to a height of 19,347 feet (5,897 meters) above sea level. Begin in Quito, the capital city of Ecuador and the second most populous after Guayaquil. The city center, including the central square, Plaza de Independencia, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and includes spectacular churches with gothic architecture and republican-era buildings. The city is also on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano and there is an aerial tramway, the TeleferiQo, which goes to the top and where travelers can sightsee, dine at the restaurants, and walk along the paths. Nightlife is concentrated in the neighborhood of La Mariscal Sucre. Other attractions include the Inca ruins in town, the Mitad del Mundo monument to the equator about 22 miles (35 km) north of Quito which is close to the Pululahua Reserve, and the Otavalo market which can be done as a day trip or an overnight stay.Car travel is the best way to see the Ecuardorian countryside and the trip between Quito and Baños is particularly stunning because, as mentioned above, it passes through the valley of the volcanoes. Of particular interest is the Cotopaxi volcano, which is located 17 miles (28 km) south of Quito. This volcano in one of the highest active volcanoes in the world and it also has a glacier, one of the few that exist on the equator and that starts at 16,400 feet (5,000 meters) above sea level. Climbing attempts are possible as is downhill mountain biking from the entrance to the national part at 15,091 feet (4,600 meters).The final stop is Baños, which is quickly becoming a top destination in Ecuador. The towns full name is Baños de Agua Santa and the town is chock full of waterfalls and hot springs. This is the place to go for a balanced itinerary of adventure and relaxation. Numerous tours can be arranged from Baños, which is tucked in between the Pastaza River and the Tungurahua volcano, and tours include kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, climbing, canyoning, and more.
